Are Rice and Beans a Complete Protein?

Rice and beans is the kind of meal that's been on family tables for generations. In Louisiana it's red beans and sausage over a bed of rice on a Monday night. In Mexico, it's frijoles refritos and arroz. In India, it's dal and rice. In Brazil, it's feijão com arroz. Most of the world has its own version of it, and they all come back to the same simple piece of food science: rice and beans together make a complete protein.

That fact gets repeated a lot. What most people don't really know is why it works, and whether their assumption about beans (that beans are 'just a side') is actually right. Both are worth understanding a little better, because the answers change what the meal really is.

Are beans really a protein?

Short answer: yes, and the confusion is worth clearing up.

A cup of cooked black beans carries about 15 grams of protein. Kidney beans are around 13 grams a cup, red beans 16, lentils 18, chickpeas 14. Most people associate protein with meat, or meat substitutes, because that’s usually how protein is marketed these days. The truth is broader than that. Beans were the original protein for a lot of cuisines, long before meat became cheaper and more commonly consumed. For billions of people, they still are. And they're a serious one, especially when they get paired right.

What makes rice and beans a complete protein?

All protein is built from amino acids. There are nine essential ones your body needs to do its job, and a 'complete' protein is simply a food that contains all nine in useful amounts.

Animal proteins like chicken, fish, and eggs are complete on their own. Most plant proteins are technically incomplete, but only slightly. The rule for plant-based eaters is the same as for everyone else: variety helps. Rotate the legumes across the week, black beans one day, lentils the next, chickpeas after that, and you cover a wider range of micronutrients along with the protein. Pair with a vegetable and you've built a balanced plate from three plant foods.

Vegetarians who include dairy or eggs have even more flexibility. A bowl of rice and beans topped with a fried egg adds another 6 grams of complete protein.
